A twin-engine Piper Cheyenne veered to avoid a collision while landing at Buchanan Field Airport in Concord California and crashed into a car dealership. At least six aboard were killed. Eyewitnesses said no ground injuries occurred and the plane had departed Santa Monica.
A car drove off Canarsie Pier at Gateway National Recreation Area in Brooklyn injuring several people. A fisherman died after being pulled from the water, while a woman and a child were reported missing. Police said the driver, Charles Winter, 62, of Richmond Hill, Queens, was in custody and could face charges. Helicopters and divers searched the area as rescue teams worked, with one man later pronounced dead at Brookdale Hospital.
At the San Francisco convention Walter Mondale ousted Charles Manatt as DNC chair and appointed Bert Lance as superchairman to centralize campaign resources. Critics recall Lance's controversial Carter administration tenure while Mondale pitched modernization. In Los Angeles Jesse Jackson offered a brief apology at a Waters fundraiser attended by about 300 supporters.
New York state gains prominence at the Democratic National Convention with Geraldine Ferraro leading the platform committee and Sen. Moynihan on that panel. Gov.
