Police hunt two hijackers who, posing as drivers, stole a truck carrying 125000 packages of cigaret tes destined for overseas fronts. The cigarets came from the Army Quartermaster Depot and the truck was recovered with the loss. A $1000 reward is offered by the trucking company for the arrest of the hijackers.
Washington reports Col. E. L. Munson says American films boost morale for fighting men abroad. He notes overseas projectors rose from 421 in March 1943 to over 3,200 now, with soldiers in units seeing about three new movies weekly.
The German war effort strains under Allied bombings and Soviet offensives. Hitler’s transport network collapses as railways halt and self propelled vehicles are redirected. With front openings in France and Italy, Germany must press exhausted manpower, including youths and older men, to sustain fighting.
Dr Wei Tao Ming, Chinese ambassador to the United States, told a University of Colorado convocation in Boulder that the war in China is taking a serious turn and that the tide will turn before year end, with the conflict nearing an end. He received an honorary doctor of laws degree.
Officials report high carbon monoxide in air samples from a smaller shaft, confirming miners likely died. Crews scaled mine entrances and drilled a nine inch shaft nearby, while a larger shaft to reach victims through a hillside could take up to three weeks to finish.
