UPI reports a 0.4 percent rise in all wholesale prices for June driven by higher costs for steel and gasoline. Food and farm product inflation eased, but overall price pressure continued into mid year.
The National Weather Service at Hancock Airport reports clear skies tonight with a low near 55 and a high around 85 to 90 tomorrow. Rain chances rise to about 20 percent tomorrow, with a few clouds and a small chance of rain Sunday. Separately, June 1976 wholesale prices rose 0.5 percent, driven by metals fuels at over half the gain. food and feed up 0.4 percent and farm products up 0.3 percent.
Pat Nixon remains in a Long Beach Memorial Hospital intensive care bed after a stroke that left her moderately to severely paralyzed and unable to walk or talk normally. Doctors warned condition could worsen and that recovery to normal walking might be unlikely. her husband is reportedly stable but disbarred in New York.
Forty Taiwan team members arrived in Detroit on an American Airlines flight from Dallas and faced denial of passage to Montreal by Allegheny Airlines due to missing Canadian visas. Canadian consulate officials were present as plans shifted to possible Boston or Rochester routes. Canada does not recognize the Republic of China and barred Olympic participation.
Carter says selecting a vice president is harder than expected though he has enough delegates to clinch the nomination. He notes three interviewees are all compatible. In North Dakota Ford expands lead with 24 delegates while Reagan gains three as 171 uncommitted remain. Carter discussed the VP role with Sens. John Glenn and Walter Mondale.
Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip arrive at Newark International Airport for a brief stopover en route to New York as part of a midpoints of their Bicentennial tour. Gov. Byrne and other dignitaries greet them. Abigail Adams porcelain and roses are presented.
Jurors convict June Buffham a former Lincoln First Bank teller of embezzlement and false entry charges after a four hour deliberation. Frank Gallo, Brewerton restaurant owner, is acquitted on conspiracy and related counts. Buffham awaits Sept 16 sentencing. others indicted include Kenneth Van Graafeiland Allen Glassford and Robert Capria.
Curtin Associates backed down from a planned lawsuit to block the reintroduction of the state lottery. Lawmakers passed a compromise bill granting New York firms preferential treatment for lottery printing contracts, delaying its effect until after imminent contracts are awarded. The company plans to meet with State Comptroller Arthur Levitt next week on contract handling concerns.
In Utica AP a nun reported a missing convent auto. Police stopped a car matching the description, and she identified the vehicle and its driver as her pastor. Police declined to name the nun or the priest amid the embarrassment. A supermarket jest about the Rolls Royce is noted.
