An Amtrak Monterailer train with 278 aboard derailed crossing a washed out culvert in northwestern Vermont, tumbling cars into a streambed. A Los Angeles family stalked a suspect for 792 days after 12 year old Susie Dixon was raped by a man who lured her at a park. The Dixons used sketches and relentless surveillance across the San Fernando Valley, following cars and driveways, until the assailant was found in April 1984.
The Los Angeles Times reports that Walter Mondale's campaign faced near disaster after losing in New Hampshire. A plan to withdraw was drawn up if he failed to win the Super Tuesday primaries on March 13, with crucial decisions made at a hastily called Atlanta airport meeting.
