Carey vetoes bill letting judges over 70 stay in office
Gov. Hugh Carey vetoed a proposal permitting non New York City city court judges to remain beyond age 70. He cited the new state Committee to Utilize Services of Retired Judges and said he would wait for its retirement recommendations. The bill would have allowed a judge to serve an entire term if the term ended within 12 months of turning 70, pending certification of capacity and necessity by the Administrative Board of the Courts. The move comes amid court backlogs and a plan to add 64 statewide judgeships and retain 34 of 36 Court of Claims positions.
