At Taejon front, American units lost a rail hub after a costly battle against Communist armor. President Truman ordered government seizure of the railroad and directed the Army to run it to protect national defense. WARSAW Poland announces rejection of a U S backed sea blockade of North Korea calling it aggression and a new attack in the war the United States is waging against Korea. Poland’s SPA reports ambassador Jan Burgin will pursue negotiations to exchange diplomatic representatives with North Korea.
A foul smelling gas forced residents from their homes in West Moline and prompted detours to high ground and fresh air. Police scanned for the source as gas crews from Iowa Illinois Gas and Electric searched two a.m. odor origins. The cloud affected East Moline Rock Island and Davenport with no injuries beyond upset stomachs.
London rejected the Russian accusation that the North Korea blockade was illegal and affirmed Royal Navy cooperation. A Foreign Office spokesman said the United States acted as a UN agent and was entitled to impose the blockade, with Britain ready to take part if called upon.
