Two words stop the trucks

The old warning cry low bridge along the Onondaga Lake Parkway has kept large tractor-trailers away from a 10 foot 8 inch railroad bridge, marking a two year accident free anniversary on July 15. Since signs were installed a year ago crashes have not occurred, despite past 28 incidents between 1986 and 1995. Assistant DOT director George Angeloro notes the trend is not guaranteed and further signs near I-81 will be added.

Armed students on campuses spark debate and stats

A survey summary shows two thirds of armed students are Caucasian. CDC surveys in 1990 and 1993 report 20 to 22 percent carried weapons within 30 days. A 1993 Gallup poll finds 27 percent of adults carry a weapon for crime protection. Meilman notes 7 percent is progress yet remains concerning. About 14 million college students imply 80,000 are armed nationwide. Federal campus statistics underscore ongoing risk.
