Disabled mountaineers summit Rainier invite from President

A group of handicapped climbers completed the Mount Rainier ascent and earned an invitation to a White House reception Tuesday from President Reagan. Doctors praised the feat as one of the greatest, though two climbers did not reach the summit. The four day ascent marked the International Year of the Handicapped with supporters cheering at Mount Rainier National Park.

Bus Tour Passengers Robbed on Way to Disney World

Sixteen tourists on a bus bound for Disney World were robbed after a man hidden aboard pulled a knife to the driver's throat. No injuries were reported as the bus continued to the central Florida theme park. The robber stole a small amount of money and some jewelry from the passengers, including ten from a group tour from Spain. Police spokesman Calvin Ross identified the robber as unidentified. The incident occurred after boarding at the Greyhound terminal in downtown Miami.

Actor Ross Martin Dies During Tennis in California

Ross Martin, the Polish born actor famed as Artemus Gordon on The Wild Wild West, died of a heart seizure while playing tennis at San Diego Country Estates in Ramona. He was 61. A doctor on an adjacent court revived him with CPR, but he died at a local hospital. Martin had a long career with 200 plus film, television and stage credits and had previously suffered a heart attack in 1969. Robert Conrad mourned his passing, praising his contribution to the world.

Fourth outshines rain no baseball Fourth of July

Rain dampened Independence Day across the capital and major cities as there was no major league baseball for the first time in the 20th century. Yet 523 Hart Plaza citizens from 61 nations took the oath of allegiance, celebrating freedom in parades, concerts, protests, and festive foods amid outages and showers. President Reagan planned a Mount Vernon birthday celebration for Nancy Reagan, while other cities highlighted parades, medals, and fireworks. Lech Walesa received Philadelphia’s Freedom Medal. Carter led Atlanta’s Salute to America parade. Wimbledon crowned John McEnroe in Britain. Food feasts and crowds marked the day from New Orleans to Chicago, with Cuba’s Miami district staging its first Fourth of July parade.

Reunion Draws 1,000 Relatives To Florian Minnesota

More than 1,000 descendants of Albert and Hedwig Kuznia gathered in Florian Minnesota for a five generation reunion. The event showcased Polish roots with Mass in Polish and English and a outdoor dance as the town hosted kin from across the region. Proceeds funded the Kuznia coat of arms buttons and a 271 page family history sold to attendees.

Sirhan's Lawyer Dies at 78 in Manhattan Nursing Home

Emile Zola Berman, famed trial attorney who defended Sirhan Sirhan and led negligence cases for decades, died at DeWitt Nursing Home at 78. Notably, he secured a $350,000 award for widow Clara Levine in 1956 after a police car strike left her crippled.

Carey announces public tours of governor mansion starting July 9

Gov Hugh Carey revealed tours of the governor’s mansion will begin July 9. Groups of 15 will see first floor rooms except kitchen and staff area, and the second floor features the McKinley bedroom, the Princess Beatrix room, and a gallery with sport photos. Tours run Thursdays 1 to 4 pm by reservation through the Office of General Services Visitors Services Bureau at Empire State Plaza Albany NY 12242.

Cloudy with showers and possible storms forecast

A cloudy day brings scattered showers later this afternoon and a chance of thunderstorms tonight. Temperatures near 85 with a low around 60, winds from the south and southwest 5 to 15 mph. Sunset 8:47 p.m. Sunrise 5:31 a.m. Record highs and lows noted for the date with averages nearby.

Storms flood Midwest and shut down events

Thunderstorms swept the eastern half of the nation with up to 8 inches of rain in Iowa, flooding roads and forcing hospital evacuations. Two children were reported missing after a family car was swept away near New Virginia, Iowa, as two women were rescued and hospitalized in satisfactory condition. In Melrose Iowa 6 feet of water forced evacuations, and roofs and trees were damaged across the region. A Fourth of July celebration in St. Louis was canceled due to rain and wind, with the Veiled Prophet Festival citing an electrical failure at the main stage. No injuries were reported in St. Louis as rainfall reached 1.14 inches in about an hour.

Brushfire in Lakeside injures 22 firefighters and grows

A 3000-acre brush fire near San Diego sent 22 firefighters to area hospitals with minor injuries as winds shifted, aiding containment. The blaze, sparked Friday by a bulldozer blade, burned steep brush, forced evacuations of about 200 residents, and prompted six air tankers to drop retardant. Authorities cited the operator and warned of possible fines.
