Paricutin lava nears the parish church of San Juan Parangaricutiro with relics moved to safety by soldiers. Army trucks and troops guard the 3 000 population town for over a week while huts on the outskirts burn and are destroyed.
Senator Robert F. Wagner of New York declines a second time as chair of the platform committee at the Democratic national convention. The DNC plans to name a new chairman by week’s end to form a subcommittee in Chicago before July 17 to draft the 1944 platform.
Est Ranger Mike Keller and wife Grace live on Caliente peak. Daily newspaper drops from Southwest Airways cargo planes as pilots signal by wagging wings. A pilot once saw the couple with the paper and began the daily delivery.
Democratic circles report Roosevelt may renominate Wallace only if Roosevelt avoids direct control of convention decisions. Four years earlier pressure came via Harry L Hopkins and James F Byrnes. If present, Roosevelt would be represented by National Chairman Robert Hannegan in talks.
Mrs. Fredericka E. Truemper of Aurora Illinois, an invalid, accepted the Congressional Medal of Honor awarded posthumously to her son Second Lt Walter E. Truemper. Brigadier General R E O Neill presented the medal at the Truemper home in a ceremony attended by family and about 100 friends. Walter, 25, died February 25 while attempting to land a damaged Flying Fortress to save his wounded pilot. The Truemper family has three other sons in military service.
