City Judge William Naftzger and Sgt Carl Smith set up the Children s Court naming a high school boy and girl to preside its jurisdiction not iron clad. Youngsters may go to Judge Naftzger or appeal. The court is an experimental approach to juvenile delinquency.

Army Outlay Of 5 Billions More Planned

Washington July 4 The administration plans to ask Congress for a supplemental appropriation near 5 billion dollars to equip an Army of 3 million men. Funds would double or triple orders for tanks heavy artillery anti tank guns and ammunition as production expands. Defense costs would exceed 55 billion dollars and rise further once cantonments uniforms subsistence and pay are added. The move accompanies talks on a new lend lease program and reflects a broader push to mobilize industry for defense.

Youths injured in alleged stolen car crash in Marcellus

Deputies investigated an automobile crash in Marcellus in which two youths, believed to have been driving a stolen car, were injured when the vehicle left the road and crashed into a ditch. One youth escaped before deputies arrived. Deputy Thomas Cooper took into custody one youth as the other fled the scene along the highway.

French Troops Seen Heading for Syria

Ankara July 3 French forces were sighted boarding ships in Sal onika en route to Syria amid reports of a regiment joining the colonial army against the Free French British invasion of Lebanon and Syria. British sources noted continued reinforcement of the French air force flying from North Africa and France via Greece and the Dodecanese. A Soviet plane carrying eight British officials left Ankara for Moscow and returned with wireless instructions. its mission arrived from Cairo last night. In Kern County California a simple white wooden cross marks the spot where Father J J Crowley known as The Desert Padre died in a 1940 automobile crash while en route to a Mass at a CCC camp. His 11 000 square mile parish was famed as the world’s largest. At his Lone Pine funeral near Mt Whitney 3000 mourners filled the streets.
