As Onondaga County marks a decade of recycling this month, officials warn of troubling trends in the war on waste. Trash generation grows while recycling levels slow or drop, with curbside recyclables down from 42,310 tons in 1996 to 39,311 in 1998 and 40,274 last year. Overall recycling rate slides from a peak of 68 percent, and trash totals rise by 10.4 percent since 1997, reaching 347,758 tons.
County recycling production last year reached the highest level since the program began in 1990. Expert David Wazenkewitz notes a regional trend of rising waste with a stronger economy and more packaged goods, including internet shopping, boosting packaging and waste.
