John S Sieciorom Kenton Missouri and Kenneth W Decker Kelso Washington survived a plane crash that left them stranded in a hidden Shangri La valley for two and a half months. Survivor Sam Wells described circling the valley and a first attempt glider pickup at 137 miles per hour and 1500 feet altitude, with 700 feet of cable and 300 feet tow rope deployed. They rose to 10 000 feet but descended to 9 000 feet due to heavy drag, finally escaping with the glider after a harrowing ascent. The three men, though among the sickest in Hollandia, were expected to return to duty soon.
Western Kyushu coal center near Shimonoseki and the Borneo oil hub Balikpapan are targets in upheaval as a Pacific typhoon season unfolds. New York City Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia named Edgar Bromberger as Chief Magistrate with a $13.00 annual salary and a $10,000 commission for the position. Henry H. Curran was appointed Justice of the Court of Special Sessions at $12,000, ending his term as administrative head of the Magistrate's Court.
Police recovered the body of an unidentified man in a shallow grave in the northeast Bronx marshlands. The body, buried except for a foot, appeared to be about a month old with no obvious signs of violence, officials said. The deceased was estimated to be in his thirties.
President Truman nominated James F Byrnes for secretary of state and the Senate is expected to approve quickly. Byrnes meets needs with wide experience from three branches and Democratic alignment. If Truman dies before confirmation, Morgenthau could assume the presidency. The House approved a 1886 reform shifting succession to the speaker if no vice president remains.
Allied invasion forces used pneumatic breakwaters to tame waves on Normandy beaches. Sir George Beharrell of Dunlop Rubber Co. Ltd said the units were 200 feet long and 23 feet high, the largest inflatable rubber units ever made, clamped to concrete keels to reduce six-foot waves to one foot.
Washington announces Tangier will regain its former international status after Spain occupied the neutral zone in 1950. The State Department says no longer justified for Spain to keep control, while Britain France and the United States decide on steps to restore the international regime. Tangier’s 47 square miles lie on the northwest African coast near 29 miles from the nearest point in Spain.
The announcement says Britain and France invited the United States and others to an informal Paris conference to decide Tangier’s future as an international settlement. Spain’s government signals desire to regularize the situation and may withdraw occupation troops, with Madrid informed of the Paris talks’ results.
