Industry leaders urge changes in law to aid transition from military to civilian production. They include calls for a reserve fund to cushion postwar conversion and maintain stability during market shifts.
The Cox committee charged the FCC with incompetence and endangering national security in a public hearing. Documents cite pressure from FCC Chairman James L. Fly against Army and Navy wants, including failures related to pre Pearl Harbor broadcasts and Hawaii operations.
A meeting by the Republican Nationalist Revival Committee adopted a resolution urging Col. Robert R. McCormick publisher of the Chicago Tribune to run as a Republican candidate for president in the Illinois primary next April against Wendell Willkie. The text calls Willkie internationalist and praises McCormick as an American nationalist and Republican leader.
Dr. C. J. Blanford, administrator of the metropolitan New York milk marketing area, predicts a uniform June price of 3.02 per hundredweight and a June pool value of about 20,795,000, the highest on record. He notes June production at 672,600,000 pounds and attributes the rise to more cows freshening, delayed pasturing due to dry weather, and heavier grain feeding.
Pittsburg July 2 The U S Steel Corp the largest producer says six more blast furnaces are back in operation amid rising coal supplies as more miners resume work after the third strike. About 100000 of 521000 miners remain idle as reopenings occur.
July 5 guidance urges local unions to work on that day and use compensation at time and a half as required by supplemental agreement. Districts should encourage participation and apply overtime provisions accordingly.
The House Naval Committee led by Rep Drewry intends to postpone its formal report on the renegotiation law until after the summer recess, with recommendations not expected before late September at the earliest. Strong industrial demands for modifying the law persist but will remain unaddressed through the year.
