Soviet casualties rise as air raids near Lado and Helsinki intensify. Russian forces stage offensives with heavy bombing, while Allied defenses repel several sorties and force retreat of several attacker planes.
Finnish communique says counter-attacks northeast of Lake Ladoga recaptured Russian positions after nine days of fighting. About 1,250 Russians killed and 160 captured. Finnish aircraft claim a bomber shot down near Helsinki. In a separate item, Miss Dawson suffered a leg injury and was treated at Crouse-Irving Hospital. her father heads Dawson Brothers Construction.

A two car suburban train derailed on Osaka outskirts, bursting into flames and killing between 170 and 200 factory workers, many from Sumitomo Copper Works. Syracuse area endures light snow and subfreezing readings with a low of 15 degrees and noon at 23. The Weather Bureau predicts more light snow tonight and tomorrow with little temperature change. Today marks the 15th anniversary of the great 1925 snowstorm that dumped 27 inches in the city. Watertown endures 19 below zero as multiple towns report subzero readings. Fresh snow turns East Camillus Hill to ice causing truck skids and road closures as deputies reroute traffic.
John Ageitos is arraigned in Police Court on unlicensed sale of liquor. Detectives test say a pint bottle was tossed from his home at 308 Wyoming Street and recovered. A mop drained liquor from the sink yielding about an ounce and a half. Bail set at 1000 for Feb 6. Police claim prior 60 day terms in 1937 and 1938.
Cinders and sand spread on the hill allowed a truck to crest the grade. County highway officials said plows were unnecessary last night as the wind failed to produce drifts.
