Niagara Mohawk halted daily LNG emergency supplies and Gov. Carey declared a statewide natural gas emergency. Utilities warned further reductions would hit industrial and commercial customers by Monday and urged all gas users to conserve.
A severe blizzard moved from the Midwest into the East with 50 mph winds, zero visibilities, and life-threatening wind chills. Schools closed for hundreds of thousands. highways blocked. National Guard deployed in Illinois and New York. multiple states declared emergencies as Detroit, Chicago, and Buffalo regions faced drifts, closures, and weather-related deaths.
A predawn blaze tore through the three story Stratford Hotel in Breckenridge Minnesota near the Minnesota North Dakota border. Fire officials said only one person escaped and that about twenty guests or employees may be unaccounted for. Douglas Johnson a veteran railroad worker was rescued from a second floor window. Firefighters reported temperatures at 23 below zero as the blaze burned.
Gunmen struck suburban post offices in Madrid area killing five police officers and wounding three. Prime Minister Adolfo Swarea convened an emergency cabinet session as Spain confronts its worst crisis since the Franco era and vows to arrest all political extremists.
The Pennsylvania Supreme Court ordered a new trial for former United Mine Workers president W. A. Boyle who was convicted of murdering Joseph Yablonski and his wife and daughter. The court also reversed Boyle’s three life terms, citing a missing federal auditor’s testimony and directing further action on bail and release.
Gov. Hugh Carey ordered National Guard and state snow removal equipment to Buffalo to clear streets buried by a record snowfall. Crews began after dawn as about 125000 students missed school in Erie and Niagara counties. Gas supplies were cut to 750 industries across three states amid continuing storms and strong winds.
Freddie Prinze age 22 of Chico and the Man was listed in critical condition after a self inflicted gunshot wound to the head in his Beverly Comstock hotel suite in West Los Angeles. A note was found but did not mention marital problems. Police said he had been despondent over his recent divorce filing with Katherine.
The National Weather Service at Hancock Airport issued a blizzard warning for late today into tonight. West to northwest winds 25 to 45 mph, at least three inches of new snow east, with subzero temperatures and highs near zero to five above tomorrow. Lake effect squalls to follow, 80 percent snow chance through tomorrow. Bitterly cold through Tuesday with highs near 10 and lows to 10 below. by Tuesday teens are possible.
The Energy Office will allocate fuel and work with the Public Service Commission during the emergency. Acting commissioner Jeffrey Cohen said nothing specific is planned, but heating gas for hospitals homes and residences will be maintained and reduced last. Industries urge gas conservation as Albany delays decisions to at least Monday or Tuesday. Industrial users with gas service after Oct 26 1971 face cutoff next Monday night unless they switch to an alternate fuel. Dual fuel customers have been allowed to use gas longer during the emergency.
President Carter pushes emergency energy legislation with fast congressional action in the House Commerce Committee and Senate floor debate. White House adviser James Schlesinger testifies as gas shortages hit the Southeast, Northeast, and Midwest, while lawmakers from gas states push for guaranteed decontrol plans and timing.
Washington AP The Commerce Department reports the leading indicators index rose 1.6 percent in December, the biggest gain since July 1955. Economists expect a stronger economy this year. Separately, the nation posted a 5.9 billion trade deficit for last year, with December's deficit narrowing to 351.4 million.
President Carter announced a $1.3 billion jobs program to help 200,000 of the nation’s 568,000 unemployed Vietnam era veterans. The plan aims to create 145,000 public service jobs and persuade business and industry to hire 50,000 to 60,000 more, with backing from the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion.
