Washington January 24 Representative Carlson Kansas proposed a drastic simplification of income tax laws. He would merge the Victory tax with the regular income tax creating a single base and single rates and exemptions. The plan would end withholding for some but allow returns at the taxpayer’s option.
Regional OPA Director Backman says two Albany men backed by confederates in the East hold counterfeit coupons worth thousands of gallons. They faced arraignment in North Adams district court on an open charge. Officials report ringleaders may be in New York City. Moynihan and Brandon plan federal action this week.
Col. Benjamin C. Jones is named to head the intelligence and security division of New York Port of Embarkation. He will succeed Col. Burton C. Andris who leaves for another post. Jones formerly led staff for the 28th Division.

Atlanta mother Mrs William G Roberts appealed to President Roosevelt to spare her bombardier son Lt Jack Roberts dog Rob Roy a cocker spaniel from execution under British quarantine. Quarantine station vet Capt F J Richmond at Croydon said Rob Roy would live and be returned to his master. A second dog Telek is mentioned in the pound.
The Public Health Service will use 200000 dollars to relocate physicians and dentists to communities short of medical services. Each transfer includes moving the practitioner and family and 250 dollars monthly for three months, with a one year stay required and community reimbursement of one fourth relocation costs. PHS anticipates need for up to 600 doctors in 1944.
State Correction Commissioner John A. Lyons announced the provisional appointment of William E. Snyder, principal keeper at Clinton Prison, Dannemora, as warden of Sing Sing Prison. Snyder will fill the vacancy caused by the death of Robert J. Kirby. Snyder joined Clinton Prison in 1916 and rose to principal keeper.
A powerful Bulgarian gendarmerie modelled on German forces will be formed to suppress antigovernment demonstrations and sabottage. It will include infantry cavalry and motorized units under Interior Minister Dorsche Christov with cabinet appointment of its commander.
Hugh McQuillan aged 70 marks 55 years of continuous government service and likely holds the Federal payroll tenure record. He heads the Intelligence unit's New York office after 30 years at the Post Office Department, 13 as an inspector, and is praised by Elmer L. Ivey as one of the best men.

He passed a quiet night and his condition was described as excellent by U S government monitors. Axis reports differed on the operation's nature with DNB naming a hernia operation.

Hart S. Seely of Waverly was elected president of the Citizens Public Expenditure Survey.
