Senate panel reprimands Maj. Gen. Harry H. Vaughan for accepting home freezers as gifts and criticizes him on related counts. It notes Vaughan gave a freezer to Mrs. Truman and that some units went to Washington notables, while defending the tradition of gifts to presidents.
Nine bandits robbed Brink's Inc in Boston escaping with 1 million in cash and 500000 in checks. Police and FBI questioned witnesses and held seven suspects by midmorning as rewards and details awaited final approval from Brinks leadership. One suspect reportedly previously worked as a Brink's janitor.
Jewel Ens longtime Syracuse Chiefs manager dies at 60 after a 10 day illness from pneumonia. Lying in state at Cody James Funeral Home in Syracuse with a 4 pm prayer service then burial in Normandy Missouri. Survived by wife Mary Campbell two sons Jewel Jr and James a daughter Joanne two brothers Charles and Muth and a sister Bertha of St Louis.
Errol Flynn dismissed reports he would rush to wed Romanian Princess Irene Ghika. He told reporters the plans are premature and noted the princess has not yet learned to cook.

In Herkimer, Samuel Scialdone shot 35 year old Wavell Sweet before fatally turning the pistol on himself in front of Sweet’s three daughters Norma 17 Janet 15 and Evelyn 13. Mrs Sweet underwent emergency surgery with a 50 50 chance of recovery.
Weatherman Andrew P. Keller reports temperatures around 43 early morning with a steady fall to near 20 by tomorrow. Southwest winds at 22 mph with gusts to 29 rise to 40 and 50 mph before shifting to northwest 35 to 43 mph with 55 mph gusts late today. Snow squalls and light snow expected tonight with a 20 degree temperature drop and winds easing to 25 30 mph tonight into tomorrow. Watertown reports 33 mph winds with 80 mph gusts while Buffalo log 38 mph winds with 55 to 60 mph gusts shortly before noon.
Secretary of State Acheson stated at a news conference that the United States would adhere to its policy of seeking tight international control of atomic energy even if a super A bomb is developed. He noted no current plan to change policy or pursue weapons independently.
