Central New York forecasts call for clear to partly sunny conditions today with some sun. Frigid winds and minor morning brightness expected as the week progresses. Friday may bring snow across central New York and surrounding areas.
A wintry mix was forecast for the East with rain and snow, while the West would stay mostly fair. The Southeast faced rain and the Northeast snow, with up to 2 cm in the Citie Valley and heavy snow in northern Oklahoma and Kansas. Temperatures ranged from 28 below in West Yellowstone to 81 in Fort Myers with wide regional variations.
A rare January thaw in Fairbanks Alaska lifted temperatures to 42 degrees on Sunday and Monday far above the normal minus 2. Since 1904 only 11 January days have reached 42 or higher. Strong Aleutian storms pushed arctic air southward and disrupted interior Alaska’s typical cold pattern.
