Butler Pa Jan 17 Ga Twice convicted of nonfeasance and misfeasance the president of Slippery Rock State Teachers College was sentenced to pay the costs of the case by a judge who praised him for developing the college and grid program.
The undefeated football team era is noted as alumni praise. Dr Charles S Miller faced a ruling denying arrest of judgment after a trial on charges tied to irregularities in school funds and properties. Judge John H Wilson stated the college showed no loss or personal gain from the issues.
John L. Lewis, head of the United Mine Workers, urged Congress to pass the federal mine safety bill immediately after the Bartley West Virginia disaster killed 91 miners. He noted prior pleas after the Providence Kentucky and other accidents. He warned that Congress delay has cost lives and called for swift Senate passage.
Rochester politician Thomas Broderick declares support for Gannett while endorsing Dewey in rural New York. Marvin and Broderick work together on state matters and attended a Gannett testimonial. The Republican Rural Counties group weighs endorsing none of the presidential candidates until spring primaries.
In Oslo and Eastern Norway farmers stripped sacking to clothe cattle as temperatures plunged to record lows for 23 years. The mercury dropped below zero Fahrenheit across much of Scandinavia, with 30 degrees noted in parts, triggering widespread efforts to protect livestock from freezing conditions.

Special Dispatch New York Jan 12. Harry Sommers of Atlanta former Automobile Dealers Association president and GOP executive committee member said south of the Mason Dixon Line favors Thomas E. Dewey. He telegraphed to Dewey for President HQ urging Southern delegates to back Dewey as the strongest candidate to defeat Roosevelt or any Democratic rival. Sommers praised Dewey as fearless accomplished and in tune with American tradition. He asserted Southern voters mandate will be respected by west convention delegates.
In New York on January 17, a lawyer pleaded guilty in a ring of ambulance chasers. Witness Samuel Balk, one of seven who admitted guilt, described wreaths sent to victims’ relatives to win potential clients. Sixteen remain on trial in Special Sessions Court. defendants face charges of soliciting business for an attorney and violating the penal code prohibiting such hiring.
New York January 17 (UP) Jury selection began in Earl Browder’s passport fraud case. Defense sought to limit government testimony by striking references to two alleged passport parts and to unlawfully obtained identity documents. Government contends Browder used false names for passports in 1931 1937 1938 and faces up to 16 years in prison and fines.
