Charities get little of phone pledges in 1999 drive
A New York state report shows only about 28.5 percent of 1999 pledges raised via 581 telemarketing campaigns reached the intended charities. Police unions and non-charities captured much of the rest, with examples including the Deputy Sheriff’s Benevolent Association of Onondaga and the Syracuse Police Benevolent Association. In Syracuse, a special auto show fundraiser raised nearly 39,000 for six groups, with 97 percent of ticket proceeds benefiting charities.
