Roosevelt's wage board planned hearings today on the unsettled pay dispute of 1 100 000 non operating rail employees. Chiefs of 15 Brotherhoods and carrier representatives were to appear, signaling no further delay before the panel. Army control of the rail lines may continue for another week or 10 days at the earliest.
The wage board hearing faced delays as nonoperating unions pushed to limit review to overtime pay while carriers demanded a full review of the wage dispute. A prior 24 hour deferment aimed at talks yielded no progress amid persistent disagreements. The 15 chiefs had accepted a four to ten cent raise, but unions fear a smaller total increase if overtime is merged. Administration aides reportedly favor a nine cent overall boost, leaving board authority interpretation unresolved.
Allied air attacks on Sofia halted most railway traffic out of Bulgaria for 24 hours. Trains to the Turkish frontier were stranded. only two Bulgarian passengers reached Istanbul. Police entry controls and looting warnings were reported, with Bulgarian rail and road evacuation measures cited by Swedish press and a broadcast monitored by U.S. authorities.
Washington reports the Office of Price Administration will start a new pricing formula January 27. Retailers must add specified per pound markups to costs rather than use the prior customizable rate. The change targets shrimp scallops and 45 fresh fish species with hopes to lower consumer prices while preserving some fishing profits.
Allied air forces intensified operations against Japanese coastal positions in New Guinea. Liberator and Mitchell bombers attacked Alexishafen and surrounding bases, starting fires and destroying installations. Naval patrols and Catalina aircraft damaged enemy ships off Kavieng and bombed airstrips at Rabaul and Hansa Bay while infantry scouts probed Arawe and Cape Gloucester.
United States Seventh Air Force bombers carried out three raids on the Marshall Islands sinking or damaging three Japanese ships and damaging two enemy fighter planes. A small auxiliary vessel was sunk and a medium cargo vessel possibly sunk at Maleolap lagoon where shipping to the garrison is concentrated. One American plane was lost but the crew was saved.
New York dairy officials report December milk deliveries priced at 3.50 a hundredweight, 10 percent above last year. The New York pool farm value for December receipts is given as 13,342,416.62 despite a 10 percent drop in total volume to 364,006,788 pounds.
American medium and fighter bombers attacked Japanese rail and river bases across occupied China. The operations damaged bridges and rolling stock on the Yangtze while destroying river craft. Additional strikes hit ships near Fort Bayard on the Kwengchowan peninsula as warehouses and a radio station were targeted.
