Frank I Harmon commissioner of Public Works announced mass layoffs to save money. At least 21 positions will be eliminated January 15 to reduce costs and boost efficiency with several posts reshuffled.
In Mississippi a posse captured Leon Turner and Wendell Whitt, the remaining fugitives in the killings of three Negro children, ending a seven hour manhunt after Malcolm Whitt’s arrest earlier. District Attorney Henry L. Rodgers labeled Turner the ringleader.

High winds swept Syracuse and surrounding areas with gusts up to 75 mph in Buffalo and 72 mph at Rome. Trees fell, wires were brought down, and traffic and power service were disrupted as poles and billboards collapsed and plate glass windows shattered in Buffalo.
Dr Walter A Maier 57 famed pastor of the International Lutheran Hour died of a heart attack at St Louis Lutheran Hospital He had been admitted on December 28 after suffering a prior heart attack in his Concordia Seminary study in Clayton Missouri He suffered two more heart attacks in hospital including one last Sunday He originated the Lutheran Hour program over two Detroit radio stations. Winds reached 47 mph at Hancock Airport with gusts 63 mph at 4 10 A M. Boston area utility damage left 50 to 75 subscribers without service. Roads blocked by fallen trees and a landslide along Armstrong road near Lakeland and Amboy delayed cleanup efforts.
General Foods Corporation cut Maxwell House coffee by four cents a pound to 76 cents wholesale. Dealers see the reduction as a response to competition in the roasted coffee market as vacuum packed sales lag after last year’s hoarding wave.
A severe Pacific storm battered the West Coast and northern Rockies with snow rain and hail. Winds up to 55 miles per hour snapped ice laden lines while Highway 99 remained blocked and power cut off nine towns in north coastal California. The tail reached southern California as rain fell around Los Angeles.

George Kitts 42 a Syracuse truck driver for Associated Transport died when his tractor-trailer overturned on Route 9 W near Kingston. He was trapped as gasoline and cargo burned. another driver Edmund Preble tried to aid but was repelled by heat. Kitts served in Europe as a captain and returned to work in 1945. He is survived by his wife two daughters and several siblings and relatives.
Ohio Senator Taft at a Cincinnati dinner dismissed a corrupt politician with a sharp epigram. He quipped that if it were not for their mistakes some men would never be heard of.
In New York, the liner Italia radioed a Coast Guard distress after sailing with 23 Kiss Me Kate performers aboard by mistake. The cast had boarded to stage a March of Dimes benefit and did not hear a warning whistle. While awaiting rescue, the performers reportedly charged passengers for kisses.
Two men were arrested by the Syracuse vice squad for involvement in a numbers selling racket. Edward Dams 45 of 1A Linden St and John Redick 40 of 820 Almond St were detained after Dams sold five five cent tickets to Redick. Hamm admitted 18 months in the lottery trade and former lieutenant in a larger ring. Hamm to be charged with selling tickets Redick booked as material witness. This marks the third gambling arrest since Jan. 1.
Faye Emerson left by plane for Washington D C after arranging a divorce from Eliott Roosevelt. She departed at 10 05 A.M with a change of planes at Dallas en route to the capital.

The mercy death murder trial of Dr. Hermann N. Sander, 41, will open in superior court in Manchester New Hampshire February 20. The announcement was made today.
The Albanian People's Assembly voted to honor Joseph Vissarionovich Stalin by erecting a statue. The Veletrapa Agency reported Albania's government called Stalin a god and designated him with divine status.
