Senate Republicans favor combining two or three labor bills into a single omnibus measure. Ball Taft Smith propose industry wide bargaining limits, 60 day strike delay and union financial reports. CIO calls for full hearings on the Ball Taft Smith bill as lawmakers plan brief testimony.
A June to December marriage was disclosed linking Manuel C. Lima, 21, of Fall River Massachusetts, to Laura M. Brightman, 69, of Boston Massachusetts. The couple’s union was reported in Phoenix.
A Chicago report says retail food prices are generally falling with no more sharp boosts. A country wide spot survey shows prices down for eggs cheese lard fresh and canned meats fruits and dried peaches and apples. In Ottawa the Canadian government removes price control on some goods and signals world price trends may ease with summer pack expectations. An Army weather plane over Mayon Volcano in Luzon reports a gray haze and smoke streams from the cone, covering about a 100 mile section. Observers note the cone remains intact despite frequent eruptions in the past century, making eruption timing uncertain.
Buffalo report notes ex lovers Vincent Catena and Jeanette aboard a fleeting reconciliation. After a two month quarrel over control, the pair kissed and promised peace. Two days later Jeanette left for her mother's, with Catena vowing to seek a new job and forget the past.
A 42-year-old ordained minister from Columbus phoned police to report he had killed his mother, Lavinia Wright, 75, at her home. Investigators found her beaten to death with a metal piece from a stove. The minister, Ernest Wright, was arrested after the call and taken into custody. Coroner John B. Gravis reported the fatal injuries.
Memphis Tennessee delegates at the National Fire Instructors Conference gained practical experience when a blaze on the Claridge Hotel eighth floor routed about 30 fire fighting experts from bed to scene. The mattress fire was quickly controlled with no injuries reported.
Southern Railway streamliner derailed near Burke Tennessee. A section foreman's daughter, nine others were injured as the eight-car wreck occurred along the right of way between Washington and Memphis. Fatality confirmed among bystanders.
In Rome a major split within the Italian Socialist Party occurred as anti Communist faction led by Giuseppe Saragat walked out at the 25th annual congress over plans to work with the Communists. Saragat proclaimed the walkout would form a new party amid fears of civil strife. Pietro Nenni, pro Communist and foreign minister, remained with the party during Alcide de Gasperi’s U.S. visit.
Oslo officials stated last night that the Soviet Union did not request military bases in Spitsbergen. The only proposal involved a reconsideration of a 1920 Arctic islands agreement, which Russia could not influence.

Contempt fines totaling 3,510,000 were assessed for prior violations as Lewis regained effort to overturn the directive ahead of next week’s arguments.
Republicans outlined a plan for a large scale probe of munitions profits and pressed to keep the War Investigating Committee active with Chairman Brewster of Maine conferring with Senator Gurney of South Dakota. Hughes Tool President Noah Dietrich said Howard Hughes and actor Cary Grant, reported missing after leaving Wright Field Dayton in a B 23 bomber, are safe. Dietrich would not disclose Hughes plans or current location, only noting they changed course from Dayton to an unknown destination.
