A rear end crash on the Jefferson Park branch near Addison Street leaves more than 200 of 600 riders injured with 11 in critical condition. Four trapped passengers were freed as cars buckled and seats torn loose in near zero temperatures.
Driscoll reports Mayor Lee Alexander announced support for Senator Henry M. Jackson at Hancock Airport. He will head the Jackson slate in the 4 April primary and campaign actively. Other slate members include Edward P. Kearse Thomas Cummings Ida Benderson Roberta Wieloszynski and Ann Michel. Alexander breaks with state and county party leaders over uncommitted convention slate.
Chou En-lai dies at 75 removing a long–time premier and diplomat. Teng Hsiao-ping, once purged, rises to near top power as China’s new premier and key economic policy driver. Chancellor Mao remains the lone figure above both in the party hierarchy.
The Securities and Exchange Commission opened an inquiry into the sale of New York City bonds amid a fiscal crisis. The SEC stressed no conclusions yet, while reports link the probe to politicians, bankers, brokers, and bond dealers. A private suit claims bond buyers were defrauded by concealing the city’s true financial position. The city has not sold bonds since last winter as investor confidence faltered.
Wall Street stocks post a sharp upturn with the Dow Jones industrial average climbing 1.97 to 909.95 by noon. The measure up by 55.57 points in the first five trading sessions, signaling upbeat economic sentiment. The Hirsch Organization notes this is the best opening week since 1938.

Mrs. Guy McCall in Crawfordsville Iowa describes recurring septic tank explosions that blast water from toilets. Four residents in a 300 person town report blasts since November with multiple events in a single night but no injuries or major damage. State officials have taken no immediate action.
In Manhattan, Patrick Cunningham’s lawyer Gregory Perrin says Cunningham knows nothing about the governor and calls Nadjari’s claims scandalous. Nadjari accuses Cunningham of involvement in selling judgeships and seeks his testimony before a special grand jury after a December meeting.
