Royal Air Force says a sergeant pilot destroyed four of five Savoia S79 bombers that attacked British naval units. He fired at 100 yards, silencing two ships, causing two crew to bail out, and watched the formation crash or retreat to the Mediterranean. He laments ammo ran out before finishing the fifth.
In Berkeley California ten thousand rats kept in the University of California experimental laboratory eat about one ton of wheat per week. The rats are described as living scientifically regimented lives under study.
The Tauita Maru carried 35 Germans to Japan after two, Nicolaas Krauss and Hans Ernst, were ejected in San Francisco amid British protest. H. W. Ritter, a New York banker, stayed aboard after officials found no substantiation. Karl Scheuring, a University of Denver student, was ordered to leave the US but planned to resume studies. O L Panzler, linked to the German Library of Information, said he would not return.
Historic Horton Hall of Cheshire Academy burned last night, causing an estimated $200,000 loss. The four story brick administration building housed classrooms and offices. the school was closed for winter vacation, with no students present. Treasurer Hesselmeyer says reopening on Monday is assured and the loss is insured. The academy, roots dating to the Episcopal school of Connecticut, has long prepared students for Yale and other universities.

Ninety Thai planes bombed vast areas including Sisophon, with French defenses retreating inland. Mekong artillery clash damaged Laotian oil tanks at Thakhek. French positions reportedly destroyed. no casualties announced.
Reports from Bangkok and Singapore describe a widening clash between Thailand and French Indo China with martial law in 24 Thai provinces and Thai raids on regions near Savannakhet and Sisophon. Bangkok says French aggression prompts arms surrender and tighter restrictions on French nationals.
The Hobo Fellowship of America opened its new headquarters in New York on January 9. The facility includes a cafeteria and a barbershop and hoboes will pay for services. Ralph E. Dalton, the "Hobo Party" mayor of New York, says the heavy-bearded old hobo stereotype has passed.

PIREBUG MISSILES: Detectives overhear a man in a restaurant using a coffee cup as a mic and calling to a car to ignite a fire at 10401 Avenue L. arsonist admits starting nine other blazes in two years claiming he dislikes dogs.
In Kansas City on January 9, Forrest C. Donnell, a Republican, is poised to be inaugurated as Missouri's new governor after beating Democrat Lawrence E. McDaniel by a 3,613 vote margin. Ten colonels selected by Donnell reportedly prepared for the ceremony, even as questions arise about the November election count and related investigations.
Chicago detectives Alex Webster and Alex McCabe found an untagged car believed abandoned. They traced it to Charles Nixon and learned his vehicle theft case from over five years ago had not been solved, prompting Nixon to retrieve his auto.
