Reports say a warehouse at Pang's Food Products Inc. suffered a collapse after a warehouse fire. Four firefighters died as the main floor fell, trapping responders and triggering a broader structural collapse in the building. Authorities offered few details, citing ongoing investigations.
A 54 year old welfare clerk James Chenault was decapitated when a runaway elevator at Kingsbridge Welfare Center in the Bronx surged upward with doors open. He had been helping passengers including a pregnant woman to safety before the shaft fall. Police said the car moved at high speed and then rose again trapping bystanders.
Brooksville Florida expected 3000 people at Tom Warn Park for a picnic honoring Army helicopter pilot Bobby Hall who spent 13 days in a North Korea camp and was released December 29. President Clinton was slated to call the park by telephone but was not expected to attend in person.

Two strong earthquakes struck northern Japan injuring at least 25 people and damaging buildings. The first quake, magnitude 6.9, occurred at 7 38 am near Iwate off the coast, followed four hours later by a magnitude 6.2 event. Eight major rail lines were halted and eight buildings damaged in Aomori.
Relatives of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman intend to attend Dr. Simpson's forthcoming trial despite defense efforts to bar them.
