NY workers face a new payroll deduction of up to six cents a week under the state disability benefits law. Employers of four or more must match worker contributions. The program runs until June 30 to build a reserve for benefits and will switch to a permanent plan later. Benefits range from ten to twenty six dollars weekly during eligible periods.
The American freighter Flying Arrow sails from Hong Kong to Shanghai despite a Nationalist warning the port is mined and in defiance of the U S State Department. The Isbrandtsen Line vessel carries a full crew with 11 foreign sailors replacing 11 Americans. Previously four Isbrandtsen ships were seized or fired upon as Nationalists seek to starve Shanghai, held by Chinese Communists.

Two men died in a fast spreading fire at 24 Frazeest Auburn early today. Peter Pancio 35 and Peter Senek 60 identified by Cayuga County coroner Dr N L Woodford as the occupants. Firemen Howard Townsend and Paul Oliver Jr were injured. The fire started on the ground floor living room and spread upstairs.
Prague reports four men named Josef Horejsi Kamil Novotny Bohumil Klempt and Josef Pizak were executed after the Supreme Court of Appeals refused mercy. They were convicted of anti state propaganda illegal border crossings assassination attempts bombing a Prague building and espionage for an unnamed foreign power.
Oslo Norway reports Norway followed Britain in granting full diplomatic recognition to the Chinese Communist regime last night in a move signaling new Cold War realignments.
CIO steelworkers in Schenectady and plants in Dunkirk Auburn and Keastrobe Pa prepared to strike at midnight after eight months of failed talks with American Locomotive Co. About 10 000 workers would be affected. A mass meeting was set for Monday as the union seeks a pension and insurance plan modeled after the basic steel agreement.

A Davenport hospital blaze trapped 31 patients and many attendants in the St. Elizabeth ward. Coroner Wildman said 26 women were found dead and 11 more believed lost, with 31 others injured. Fire raged for four hours as prisoners and staff attempted to escape through barred windows.
