A $1,500,000 five alarm fire engulfed a 6060 foot Brooklyn pier with its cargo, affecting Lower Manhattan and the harbor. Firefighters fought the blaze through the night, two firemen were hospitalized after falling overboard, and an 8498 ton Argentine freighter named Rio Parana was towed burning into the East River before being extinguished. Authorities reported conflicting origin reports between pier and ship.
New snow flurries were forecast for the metropolitan area with clearing weather expected afterward. Temperatures were projected to reach the mid 30s.
London warned Yugoslavia and Bulgaria of grave consequences if they recognize the Communist state proclaimed in Northern Greece by Markos Vallades. The warning followed British American consultations.

The Civil Aeronautics Authority reported 25 Puerto Rican passengers and a two man crew were aboard with no confirmation on survivors. The Puerto Rican passenger detail came from Raleigh North Carolina where the aircraft refueled earlier.
A blaze that raged into the early morning hours in Greenville destroyed or damaged four businesses on Main Street. Officials estimate the loss at about $250,000 with multiple firms reporting extensive damage.
