Evacuation Ordered After Maysville Fertilizer Plant Fire
Evacuees along the Ohio River left homes Sunday as a fire at the Cargill Inc fertilizer facility in Maysville Kentucky burned for over 14 hours. Officials chose to let the blaze burn out rather than spray water to avoid spreading toxic chemicals toward the river. The plant housed herbicides pesticides and 420 tons of ammonium nitrate. Deputy State Fire Marshal Kenny Johnson said the cause may never be known and the incident appears accidental.

Jet shows new technology, trainer may be hazardous
Soaring over California's Mojave Desert a tiny remotely piloted jet demonstrates agility and stealth potential beyond today’s fighters. The X-36, controlled from the ground, made 31 flights last year, has no tail, uses thrust vectoring, and reduces radar visibility and weight. Time reports the British T-3 Firefly trainer used for U S Air Force cadets is more dangerous to fly than the B 1 bomber or F 117. Six people, three student pilots and three instructors, have died in T-3 crashes since 1995, with its predecessor, the T-41, having no fatalities from 1964 to 1994. General Merrill McPeak commented on the trainer’s role in producing warrior pilots rather than casual flyers.
