The French tug Arbeide 25 joined, while foreboding seas threatened another breakup. Crew of 49 and 20 passengers abandoned to lifeboats earlier, Carlsen and Tugmaster Dancy stayed aboard to guide the rescue.

The British Press Association said two American service planes crashed on a Burtonwood Air Base runway with several crew members killed. Giant airlift to speed POWs home under Operation Homecoming
A large airlift, unofficially named Operation Homecoming, will medically screen and transport about 3 198 American POWs held by North Koreans to Japan for care before flight to the United States. Col George Patrick Welch says every effort will be made for medical welfare and fastest possible movement. Routes from Japan will include a central Pacific path to San Francisco via Honolulu and a northern route via Seattle and Alaska.
