Frigid New Year Brings Bitter Cold and Snow

Central New York faces frigid air with lows near zero to 10 below and highs around 0 to 10 above. Winds 15 to 30 mph create wind chills well below zero. Snow chances hover 70 to 80 percent tonight and tomorrow, with flurries and locally heavy squalls likely through the weekend.

Fire displaces, claims ten lives in two blazes

Five people died in a mobile home fire in Kingsbury near Glens Falls and seven died in a two story house fire in New Brunswick New Jersey. Authorities reported a child heavy death toll and described initial casualty details from both sites. Meanwhile Lafayette Parish Prison inmates seized control prompting a late morning assault to free two jailers with no injuries reported.

425 a Winner in New York Lottery Drawn Yesterday

The winning number 425 was drawn in New York state lottery yesterday. The public note includes a counterpoint about criticism, stating constructive criticism versus destructive criticism as a dialogic example.

Iran renews death threat against 52

The 52 American hostages in Iran faced renewed threats of execution as Algerian intermediaries returned from Washington with a counterproposal meeting about half of Iran's $24 billion demand. Tehran Radio warned procrastination could force an uncompromising position and trials for the hostages. Carter said the U.S. proposal aimed to safeguard hostages and urged Iran to accept. Washington sources said the plan includes depositing up to $12 billion of Iranian assets in an escrow in a neutral country for release upon hostages' freedom. (Concluded on Page A2).

Hotel blast kills 16 in Nairobi

A New Year’s Eve explosion at the Norfolk Hotel in Nairobi killed 16 people and injured 85, including nine Americans and at least one Briton. Police cautioned the cause was not yet determined, with possibilities including an internal explosive device or a gas cylinder. The hotel, packed with foreign tourists, saw 11 more bodies found as authorities sealed the site and investigated.

Yank pitching great Bob Shawkey dies

Former New York Yankee star Bob Shawkey, a Syracuse resident and 1930 Yankees manager, died after a long illness at age 90. A right hander, he finished 196-152 in 15 MLB seasons from 1913 to 1927 with the Athletics and Yankees, won a 1923 World Series game, and pitched and homered in the first game at Yankee Stadium. He also coached baseball at Dartmouth College.
