A two year old started a kitchen stove fire that spread to magazines in Dallas, killing four toddlers and seven others, part of four fires across four states that killed 11 preschoolers. Separately, budget talks resume in Washington as Reagan calls for action amid political tensions.
David, the 12 year old known as the bubble boy, died Wednesday in Texas Children's Hospital after leaving his sterile two room enclosure an attempt to regain a normal life. He suffered a severe immune deficiency and had undergone an experimental bone marrow transplant from his sister in October.
President Reagan at his 22nd press conference says critics do not know what they're talking about as Mondale accuses indecision. He defends Beirut withdrawal as a careful decision, likening governance to a board of directors while emphasizing responsibility for final calls. Mondale labels him intellectually lazy, prompting a candid back and forth.
In Cicero sheriff deputies found a wall torn from 7300 Lake Shore Road where Leonard Freeborn reports about 7000 dollars in damages. He had evicted Edward Atkins and Gloria O’Brien for nonpayment after they lived there until earlier this month. Police say Atkins is charged with second degree criminal mischief.
West Des Moines Iowa police and private investigators defend the 13 year old missing newspaper carrier Johnny Gosch as his mother Noreen reports three short calls she believes were from him. The calls lasted about 40 seconds each, with mixed voice and possible drug influence. The family says tracing was deemed impossible and FBI cautioned the calls were long distance.
Israeli jets attacked suspected guerrilla bases in central Lebanon as U.S. Marines began breaking camp at Beirut airport. The strikes, the third this week, hit a staging post, headquarters, and an artillery position near Mansouriyeh. Police reported 15 civilians killed, 58 wounded as Shiite and Druze militias clashed. Lebanese army units moved to police west Beirut.
