Storm snarled transport as plants idle in freezing winds

Freezing winds and a snowstorm crippled transport along the eastern seaboard, delaying air and surface networks for nearly a day. Chemists Fix Blast Cause In Downtown Los Angeles

Chemists determined a 300 ton mixture equivalent to 3600 pounds of explosive triggered the downtown Los Angeles blast. The mixture of perchloric acid and acetic anhydride caused the Conner electro plating plant to explode, destroying much of a block and rattling the city square. Fifteen people were killed and 158 injured. workmen continued the search for missing persons as police and fire officials assessed the damage.
