State suspends lottery distributor over missing funds

The New York Lottery ordered HEC Distributors Inc of Long Island to suspend operations after an audit raised concerns. Lottery Director John Quinn said about 30 000 of roughly 60 000 questioned tickets remain unaccounted for and 100 000 owed by acting president Joseph Cassese could not be explained. Audits showed no irregularities previously, and the matter has been turned over to Nassau County district attorney. the state insists it will not lose money and that distributors must be cautious.

New York City notes sell to reopen market on own credit

NYC completed a $200 million short term note sale entering the public money market on its own credit for the first time since 1974. Major backers include $100 million tax and $100 million revenue anticipation notes with interest around 8.5 to 8.75 percent. Mayor Koch and Comptroller Goldin hailed the move as proof of financial recovery and growing revenues.

Plane crash kills Muskegon couple near Genesee Airport

Lincoln David Lamphere aged 46 and his wife Shirley Ann 43 of Muskegon die when their twin engine plane drops into a marshy field south of the Genesee County Airport. Fog and a ceiling around 300 feet likely contributed. federal investigators to probe the crash near the main hangar.

Behan Nominated to Head Veterans Administration

VA nominee Behan, a 36 year old Vietnam amputee and former Marine, said to be announced in Washington today. If confirmed, he would succeed Max Cleland and focus on trimming bureaucracy while boosting services for Vietnam veterans including Agent Orange exposure. Behan, East Hampton High School graduate, was wounded in 1966 after joining the Marines in 1963.

Measles Emergency Declared in Westchester County

A health emergency is set in Westchester County due to a measles outbreak. In seven weeks of the year there are 60 cases, 50 in the last two weeks, far surpassing the 21 cases in all of 1980. No susceptible student may attend school until immunization proof is provided or the emergency ends.
