The Chicago AP report notes housewives now have more purchasing power than a month ago after price controls ended but far less than a year ago. It recalls wartime prices such as ham at 21 cents a pound and margarine at 17 cents for two pounds, highlighting how much has changed since those days.
A 1940s era market snapshot shows wheat slipping to 2% cents a bushel, corn flat to a cent lower, oats up 24 to 4% of a cent, while Chicago hogs rose 25 cents per hundred pounds and cattle and sheep held steady. President Truman departed by plane at 10 32 AM for a 15 day tour visiting Florida Puerto Rico the Virgin Islands and Cuba. His first stop was Boca Chica near Key West where he would spend the night after a four hour flight from Washington.
The United Packinghouse Workers of America won union approval for a nationwide strike of about 100,000 meat packers. The union seeks an immediate wage boost of 29 cents an hour and did not disclose a strike date.

Westport industrialist Miss Vivien Kellems said her firm today stopped withholding federal income taxes from 38 employees after a speech to the Los Angeles Rotary Club. She pledged to fight the issue in court, arguing the government must appoint her as an agent and reimburse her expenses if taxes are collected.
About fifty Democratic congressmen from 11 states, meeting in closed session in Washington, pledged cooperation with opposing southern governors against President Truman's civil rights program including anti poll tax and anti segregations bills. Representative Colmer of Mississippi chaired the group and announced a resolution of opposition.

A Republican reply condemns the President’s call for the common man to rally for politics.
A sharp earthquake last night rattled windows and shook homes across Los Angeles and nearby communities including Santa Monica Hollywood Inglewood and Burbank. Seismologist Charles Richter of Caltech said the tremor was local and unlikely to exceed about 15 miles in radius.
A Norfolk and Western Powhatan Arrow line freight train jumped the track near Portsmouth Ohio. A fireman died and another crew member was seriously injured. Local officials reported no passengers aboard the derailed freight cars.
