No lawmakers refuse pay hikes in Central New York

In Central New York, all but one congressman oppose the $12,900 pay raise they will receive this weekend, while New York State’s two senators back the raise. The 29 percent hike raises salaries from $44,600 to $57,500 for about 2,500 top federal officials. Hanley and Walsh oppose voting on it. Mitchell fully supports top-level raises but questions the automatic process.

Escaped prisoners flee Aiken jail after prison hold up

Three inmates overpowered a matron and held two jailers and a dispatcher hostage for about two hours at the Aiken County jail. They escaped with a pistol and about $1,380, then stole a car and beat its owner J. M. Christina. Identified as Leroy Jones Randy Strauman and Calvin Dawson. two escapees from NYC area and Edgefield resident Strayman.

Winter price surge lifts cost of living 0.8 percent

The Labor Department reports January CPI up 0.8 percent the largest in 18 months with spendable income down 1.1 percent from higher taxes and layoffs due to severe winter. Food energy and shelter costs led gains with rents up 0.5 percent and utilities rising.
