Destroyer Shaw Reaches U S Under Its Own Power
The 1,500 ton destroyer Shaw, damaged in Pearl Harbor and later rebuilt, has arrived in the United States under her own power for reconditioning. Launched in 1935 at Philadelphia Navy Yard, Shaw was heavily bombed at Pearl Harbor, with magazines exploded and forward section wrecked. A new bow was fitted to enable beaching at a West Coast port. The prior Shaw’s commander, now Vice Admiral William A. Glassford, earned the Navy Cross for guiding the after part of the ship to Portland, England, in 1918.
