London report says four Axis merchant ships and a warship damaged off Narvik Norway. German vessels Bruno Heinemann and Georg Thiele reportedly sunk. details vary with sources. Ships involved include warships of about 1,625 tons. Dates cited as April 15 or 20.
Republic-Wickwire plan to boost iron output by sharing from Wickwire Spencer blast furnaces. Republic will invest about 430000 to repair a second furnace unused 10 11 years and will receive part of the iron produced. Similar alliance exists between Bethlehem Lackawanna and Hanna furnace as defense plants increase output.

Jesse Van Dyke, inmate of Joliet Penitentiary, asked Warden Joseph E. Ragen for a transfer to the honor farm. The warden noted Van Dyke escaped from Vandalia prison farm and asked why go to the honor farm. Van Dyke answered I can escape again I dont like prisons.

Robert J. Bolte appeared in court to plead innocent to 185 indictments charging embezzlement and fraudulent conversion under the Securities Act in a $2.5 million investment business. He had faced expected guilty plea as more than 100 former clients were summoned to testify, and his operation collapsed after he disappeared last Oct. 22 before being found in Rochester. A second Philadelphia attorney is alleged to have misappropriated hundreds of thousands from clients over five years, a case deemed parallel to Bolte’s by Assistant U. S. Attorney Francis W. Sullivan.
Dense smoke and subzero wind drove 300 guests from the Spalding Hotel in Duluth as fire crews fought the blaze. One guest, Mrs Widcuts, suffocated by smoke and was taken to a hospital. others sheltered in the cold as responders led patrons to safety through the building.
