Members of the ruling National Assembly raise their hands in a victory gesture after Ferdinand Marcos is declared president. Outside, Corazon Aquino supporters march in a massive protest alleging fraud aided by some U S and foreign observers during the election.
In Manila talks with Marcos and Aquino, critics condemn violence and fraud in the Feb 7 election. Aquino warns democracy is at stake as tens of thousands rally for peaceful change. RAM calls for soldiers to refuse violence. US senators urge Reagan to press Marcos to step down amid fraud charges and looming instability.
In Johannesburg area rioting enters a third day with police reporting ten killed overnight. Death toll reaches 32 in nine days of renewed anti-government violence, as clashes extend to Durban and Port Elizabeth with hundreds arrested. A woman was seriously burned in an apparent necklace attack.
Iraqi forces claim breakthrough against Iranian defenses around the occupied port of Faw and push toward Shatt al Arab city with missile salvos. Iran asserts Faw remains under Iranian control as thousands die in a week of fighting. The conflict follows heavy combat after Iranians crossed the Shatt al Arab. Queen Elizabeth II begins a four day Nepal visit amid tight security and vigilance for potential Sikh infiltrators at the Indo Nepal border.
Oaxaca officials say the chief of police a deputy and a commander were dismissed over an operation in which 17 officers were hurt and a 150-strong force entered San Balta sar Chichicapan to resolve a 45 year land dispute. The unit fled before a clash erupted.
In Lisbon Mario Soares narrowly defeated Diogo Freitas do Amaral to become Portugal’s first elected head of state since 1926. Soares won about 51.3 percent with 9,012,982 votes, uniting the fragmented left and center after four contenders in the first round. The victory comes as Portugal marks 16 governments in 12 years since the dictatorship’s end. Soares pledges to stabilize the system.
A Soviet built jet dropped a single bomb on the runway at N'Dyantena, Chad, causing runway damage but no injuries. French authorities called the strike symbolic and said repairs had begun, while noting the attack appeared to be a blind bombing from high altitude. The bomber's nationality was not determined, but Libyan affiliation was suspected.
A China Airlines Boeing 737 with 13 aboard disappeared after a brief touch down at Penghu airport and a gear problem. An oil slick was spotted in rough seas nearby, officials said, with no wreckage or survivors found. All aboard were Taiwanese. The plane flew Taipei to Penghu, about 185 miles west.
