Three Mexican officers fired after 17 fatally hurt

Oaxaca officials say the chief of police a deputy and a commander were dismissed over an operation in which 17 officers were hurt and a 150-strong force entered San Balta sar Chichicapan to resolve a 45 year land dispute. The unit fled before a clash erupted.

Portugal elects its first civilian leader in 60 years

In Lisbon Mario Soares narrowly defeated Diogo Freitas do Amaral to become Portugal’s first elected head of state since 1926. Soares won about 51.3 percent with 9,012,982 votes, uniting the fragmented left and center after four contenders in the first round. The victory comes as Portugal marks 16 governments in 12 years since the dictatorship’s end. Soares pledges to stabilize the system.

Plane bombs N'Dyantena airport in Chad capital

A Soviet built jet dropped a single bomb on the runway at N'Dyantena, Chad, causing runway damage but no injuries. French authorities called the strike symbolic and said repairs had begun, while noting the attack appeared to be a blind bombing from high altitude. The bomber's nationality was not determined, but Libyan affiliation was suspected.

Plane vanishes near Taiwan after failed landing attempt

A China Airlines Boeing 737 with 13 aboard disappeared after a brief touch down at Penghu airport and a gear problem. An oil slick was spotted in rough seas nearby, officials said, with no wreckage or survivors found. All aboard were Taiwanese. The plane flew Taipei to Penghu, about 185 miles west.
