In Alaska, the Coast Guard ordered the icebreaker to Bering Sea to aid the search for seven seamen from the sunken crab boat Americus and seven from its sister ship. The Americus was found capsized off the eastern Aleutians and sank after divers could not reach the crew. One body was sighted by Soviet trawlers. two life rafts were found empty. The search was suspended at night but to resume with the Polar Sea arriving at dawn with divers aboard.
Sen Gary Hart of Colorado announces a long shot bid for the 1984 Democratic nomination saying Americans face national renewal vs decline. At 45 he is the youngest of six likely candidates and calls for retraining workers, refurbishing factories, and expanding world trade to spur economic recovery.
Secretary of State George P. Shultz said he has the personal assurance of Syria's Foreign Minister Abdul Halim Khaddam that Syrian troops will withdraw from Lebanon when Israel leaves.
