Police bury deputy as officers gather for funeral

Police officers, corrections officers and Army National Guardsmen attended the burial of Opendaga County Deputy David R. Clark, 33, shot while escorting a prisoner from DeWitt town court. Deputy Bernard J. Meleski was wounded, and William R. Blake Jr. was arrested for murder and attempted murder. Services were set for 10:15 a.m. at a church on North Salina Street after a gathering at the Sheraton Inn in Liverpool.

State to decide on probe into deputy shooting

State officials will decide within a month whether to investigate the fatal shooting of Onondaga County sheriff deputy David R. Clark and wounding of Bernard J. Meleski while escorting prisoners from DeWitt Town Court. Commission of Corrections spokesman Stephen DelGiacco noted the incident involves a county prisoner and county corrections staff.

Kidnappers suspend their swap offer in Beirut

Islamic Jihad for the Liberation of Palestine suspended a bid to swap four hostages, including Robert Pohl, for 400 Arab prisoners held by Israel. The group did not renew a death threat and released a photo of Pohl. Islamic Jihad also denied involvement in Jean Obeid’s kidnapping and released a photo of Terry Anderson. Nabih Berri said the move may not be negative but will study the statement from the kidnappers.

Refugees receive flour and milk under uneasy truce

Tens of thousands of hungry Palestinians in Bourj el Baraneh refugee camp in Beirut received 15 tons of flour and two tons of powdered milk under a fragile ceasefire between Amal militiamen and camp defenders. A three track relief convoy escorted by Syrian and Iranian observers arrived at 1 a.m and departed an hour later. An Iranian envoy was killed hours earlier as a U.N. convoy neared, with blame exchanged between Palestinians and Shiites.
