Will L Clayton, former secretary of state and vice president of the Atlantic Union Committee, told a Senate subcommittee that a third world war threatens unless U S policy changes radically. Funds released would back Deegan Expressway and a Brooklyn Queens route, with other money allocated to Routes 27 5 and 20 in upstate New York.
The 214 ton Finnish freighter Karhu sank off the Dutch coast after a shifting deck caused it to list. Seventeen crewmen were rescued by Dutch lifeboats, while 11 seamen and a stowaway drowned. Captain Hugo David Groenstrand ordered abandon ship one minute before sinking. The ship carried wood pulp from Finland to France.
The joint chiefs of staff announced Gen Douglas MacArthur may assume command of American naval forces in Japanese waters in emergencies. They reported a top secret paper on Communist advances in Asia and noted cost savings from on site consolidations.
Harley Lamarr a 19 year old Indian youth, whose mother Amelia Palascuzinski was jailed for manslaughter in a stepfather death, confessed to killing Marion Frisbee, 46, wife of a beverage company manager. Police found Frisbee’s body on a Clarence road after she disappeared en route to a party. The rifle used was found in Frisbee’s car near Lamarr’s home. Lamarr denied raping her.
A 31 year old wife was held without bail after she allegedly confessed to drowning her nine week old daughter. Police Chief Hogan said the woman told him she held the child under water in a bathroom washbowl. District Judge Cox ordered her held for the grand jury.
Weatherman Andrew P Keller forecasts four to five inches of snow tonight and tomorrow, with dangerous driving likely as temps dip to 28 tonight and 23 tomorrow. He notes a storm system moved from Arkansas into Ohio and into parts of Pennsylvania Virginia and New York, with moisture fueling snow or rain depending on freezing. Expect easterly winds 10 to 15 mph becoming 7 to 15 mph tonight and tomorrow.

Officials at Syracuse University ski school ordered eight tons of crushed ice for delivery to the Hickory Hill slope to ensure uninterrupted instruction. A spokesman said they would not cancel classes even if snow forecasted for tonight materializes, noting classes were held daily last week despite sparse snowfall.
