Judge Patrick J. Cunningham ruled Northwest Airlines could not keep nearly 1000 dollars from Marcia Mathews for six no-refund Easter vacation tickets. He called the policy an unconscionable abuse of rights and unjust enrichment.
Panamanian pilot Flora Carlton testifies before a Senate panel about long ties to Gen Manuel Antonio Noriega including gun running and drug smuggling. Carlton says he arranged a Noriega Medellin cartel deal to protect drug shipments via Panama to the United States amid a Miami narcotics case.
ABC Washington Post poll shows Dole and Robertson gaining on George Bush in New Hampshire while Dukakis leads Democrats. Gephardt gains among Democrats after Iowa, with Simon rising and Dukakis maintaining a large Dem lead. Robertson moves up and Bush remains front runner in New Hampshire.
The ABC Post poll shows Dole leading Republicans in New Hampshire with 33 percent, Bush 34 percent in an earlier poll, Kemp 12 percent, and Robertson at 10 percent. Among Democrats Dukakis leads at 36 percent with Gephardt 22 and Simon 18 percent. Jackson and Gore 5 percent each, Babbitt and Hart 4 percent.
Syracuse area report details county legislature chairman William Sanford facing Democratic and Republican challenges to his initial patronage appointments. A water board nominee was defeated after GOP defections, while an IDA board nomination is contested. Critics accuse Sanford of breaking promises for open government as planning and full legislature votes loom.
The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled 2-1 that homosexuals are entitled to constitutional protections against government discrimination. Rights activists, led by National Gay Rights Advocates in San Francisco, say the ruling was long overdue for gay service members.
LaFayette town officials disclosed that the LaFayette Community Council's funds were siphoned by former president Carolyn Weisbrodt. Auditors flagged a $3,245.05 shortfall after Weisbrodt, elected in June, cited unemployment as a motive and said she was used to having cash. Weisbrodt gave a brief telephone interview describing her role.
