A major blaze at the Acme Furniture Co warehouse on Columbia Ridgeways wrecked a large block, injuring over 50 including firemen and bystanders. Wind gusts, eight alarms, and 40 plus fire companies battled flames as 50 families lost homes and 1,000 were displaced.
British desert fighters hold positions at Tobruk and launch patrols against the Axis in the El Mechili area south of Gebel El Achdar. Mobile columns clash with Rommel’s forces 12 miles west of Ain El Gazala as efforts continue to harry Axis communications lines.
The Italian High Command reported Fascist warplanes raided Alexandria Egypt hitting military targets and downing one British plane. They said the raid returned safely under anti aircraft fire while noting British raids on Tripoli caused two native casualties. German raids on Malta were also reported.
Federal Judge Harold P. Burke issued an order allowing the government to take 10 000 acres in Niagara County for a powder plant under the War Powers Act. About 170 families are affected with 35 to move in two days and the rest to be displaced in staggered fashion. This marks the act’s first wartime use since World War I granting immediate possession without prior negotiations.
Lewes Del Feb 9 Survivors of the American tanker China Arrow claim their ship was sunk by the same Axis submarine that destroyed two other American vessels in the prior 36 hours. The 403 ton ship was torpedoed and set afire 100 miles off the coast with 37 crew saved after 56 hours adrift. Captain Paul H Browne and crew member Kenneth W Maynard described torpedoes and shelling as the submarine lingered to shell lifeboats. Four crew members were hospitalized including Benjamin L Logan with a fractured hip.

Defense officials in Albany and towns along the Hudson and Mohawk Rivers announced a mass blackout test to occur tonight after 9 P.M. The timed lights outage remains secret but will be announced by radio, siren, and bomb warnings. The area includes Albany Schenectady Troy Saratoga Springs Hudson and many nearby villages and towns.
Tangier scenes of unrest subdued by martial law after a taxi bomb killed 14 and wounded dozens in the Spanish controlled International Zone. Britain and Germany blame each other for inciting Arab violence as Axis agents are suspected in London plots. Tangier residents protest outside foreign missions and the government house asserting Tangier is not at war.
The United States moved clocks ahead one hour to wartime time starting at 2 AM in all time zones. The change aligns with wartime needs, delaying sunrises and sunsets by an hour and will end six months after the war. Sleep will be restored when standard time returns.
A British source says a bomb likely was packed in diplomatic luggage to detonate at the legation and riots followed to shift blame onto Britain for the disaster. German radio brands the protests a mass demonstration of indignation at Britain and warns Spain will not accept the affront, noting Tangier's anger matches Spain's.
Observers in Spain list Tangier incidents among a flotilla of European and Moslem diplomat travels andAxis tensions. The piece warns that if Spain permits it Germany might use the area as a base for advancing on Gibraltar, with risks reaching Northwest Africa and beyond.
