Aussie dust storm plunges Melbourne into darkness

A dust storm with winds up to 66 mph swept across Victoria, Australia, darkening Melbourne and halting air, land, and sea traffic. Utilities clear to cut service to homes in Erie County

A judge lifted a temporary restraining order allowing electric and gas utilities to shut off service to homes in Erie County over the weekend. Lawyers for National Fuel Gas Distribution Corp Niagara Mohawk Power Corp and the county agreed in a closed-door meeting to discuss procedures for collecting overdue bills. County lawyer Larry Rubin said utilities will not cut off service to needy families seeking county assistance for 30 days.

Farmworker wins Arizona lottery jackpot

Ramon M. Lopez, a 43 year old farmworker who speaks no English and has seven children, won 1 million dollars in the Arizona lottery. He will receive 50,000 dollars a year for 20 years through an official statement interpreted for him. Lopez has lived in Arizona 20 years and works for Stack Farming in Blythe, California, with his wife Francisca and their children aged 4 to 18.

Balloon chair flight earns Bonehead of the Year title

North Hollywood truck driver Larry Walters earned the Bonehead of the Year Award for a July stunt in which a lawn chair lifted by balloons rose to 16,000 feet before he released ballast and descended into Long Beach power lines.
