60 Year Old Firehouse Reconverted for Engine Company 2

A 60 year old former engine house on North Salina Street is being reconverted for Engine Company 2. City Engineer Nelson F. Pitts says the two story building will be revamped to provide rooms for a hook and ladder and a pumper and dormitory space. Contractors have torn away sections of the structure. Estimated cost is 40000 dollars. New dens will be added to accommodate modern firefighting equipment and a new engine house will replace the condemned Division Street building. Work should finish by spring barring shortages. The site has housed veterans welfare, wartime shelter and emergency housing in earlier years.

County officials pressed for state control of Highbridge Road from Lyndon to Manlius to cut rights of way costs and save about 250000. They cited the state’s 750000 construction spend and argued the strip connects two major highways, urging inclusion in state Route 2080. Deputy County Attorney Tyminski said landowners demand high prices, complicating rights of way for the project.
