High school segregation reflected in early 1990s Syracuse schools

Ronald Malik Mason recalls his first week at Christian Brothers Academy in DeWitt as one of the few black students. Students probed his hair and dancing ability amid a climate of subtle racism. He transferred to Nottingham High School in 1989, amid a shift toward greater diversity as 1990-91 data show 42.5 percent of 1,282 students belonging to different racial groups.
