Bank relocation clears way for hotel expansion

Onondaga Savings Bank will vacate its Onondaga and Salina Streets branch and move to a former Grant’s building on Warren Street. The city will lease the Grant’s space for 13,000 dollars annually with 4,800 dollars in improvements credits, opening a 3,200 square foot branch with six teller stations and expanded hours within six to eight weeks. The move enables demolition of the McCarthy Building and supports the 14 million dollar hotel expansion plan featuring a 15 story annex, 200 rooms, a penthouse, and a two level mall.

Fireman injured in Marcellus Street blaze

A city firefighter was hurt yesterday when a hot coupling broke and struck him in the eye during a fire that damaged two vacant buildings on Marcellus Street. The second fire is suspected to be suspicious in origin, starting in a vacant two story wood frame building at 320-22 Marcellus St and spreading to 324 Marcellus St while an occupied residence at 316 Marcellus St was protected. Firefighters prevented spread to the nearby home.

Housing code violations blamed for Green and Lodi fire

Fire officials said an apartment house at Green and Lodi streets suffered heavy damage and had housing code violations dating to 1978. Four people were injured, including a woman who leapt from a third story window. Wiring violations were cited and the fire escape was accessible only through one unit. Owner Paul Gorayeb could not be reached. legal action was pending.

WIXT unit seeks union's OK to strike

About 65 WIXT staff including reporters and engineers voted to seek approval from their union to strike. The move follows a stalled contract dispute over wage increases and benefits while management offered a non-clear package. City county clash on steam plant deadline

Baldwinsville Cyclist Dies After East Genesee Street Crash

An 18 year old Baldwinsville man Daniel J. Sullivan died at State University Hospital after his bicycle collided with a car on East Genesee Street near Virginia Street shortly before 9 pm. Vehicle driver Robert W Henderson of Connors Road Baldwinsville remained at scene. Police say Sullivan turned in front of the vehicle without warning. Investigation ongoing. no ticket issued. Agent Daniel M. Warner led the inquiry.

Two youths held in tow truck theft near Cicero

State police arrested two juveniles from Manlius early this morning after a tow truck was found driving along Route 11 in Cicero with a taillight out. Troopers pursued the vehicle, which tried to flee, and halted it near Owl Sub. The truck had been stolen from Manlius, and the youths were remanded to custody of guardians while awaiting Family Court processing.

Pawnbroker testifies Hanna bought 32 ammo before murders

Utica courtroom heard pawnbroker Joseph Nichik recall selling Hanna a box of .32 Smith & Wesson long cartridges on Oct 5 1979 and recording the sale in the ammunition ledger. Hanna and wife Jeanette were regular customers. The trial against Hanna Renard Parry and William Mooney continues with further witnesses detailing ties to the Tri Willow Nursery killings and related schemes.
