Pataki signals stadium plan possible with local borrowing

Gov. George Pataki hinted that Syracuse's baseball stadium proposal could proceed this spring if state funding is unavailable. He mentioned local governments borrowing to finance construction with the state repaying loans later, noting no firm money exists and alternatives are being explored. State Sen. John DeFrancisco said the outline could favor downtown replacement plans despite earlier opposition. There is no stadium currently.

Easterners brace for heavy snow

End of baseball strike nears as caps vanish

After a push from President Clinton the salary cap is history and a breakthrough could bring baseball back to the field. The NLRB sped up its timetable and filed an unfair labor practice complaint against owners, who then capitulated on the cap, pressuring a deal. Jerry McMorris said the move puts pressure to clear the decks and reach a agreement. Players and owners planned to resume bargaining.

Letterman hints at Dole running mate with joking slogan
