Hit Twice in Chest Pilot Saves Plane in Tunisia

Capt. Fred W. Dallas, 22, Houston, Texas, and his crew battled Nazi fighters over Bizerte, crash landing their Flying Fortress on a mountainside after taking two bullets in his chest and multiple wounds. Bombardier Kermit Beahan, 24, and Waist Gunner Elmer Berger, 21, aided by a British patrol, survived the perilful descent and hospital care followed.

China says Japan short of manpower as Thai troops aid Yunnan advance

A Chinese Army spokesman reports Japan has sent more Thai troops to reinforce three Thailand divisions on the Yunnan Burma border amid continuing fighting. He states Japan faces manpower shortages and resource strain, with scrap metal drives in occupied China and dummy guns on ships on the Yangtze. He also notes metal fittings stripped from Allied property in Shanghai.

Canners to Consider Manpower Shortage at NYS Convention
